To begin with I think one has to be aware of the “heart” of a great fighter. When speaking of “heart” we’re of course not talking about the muscular heart organ. Even more importantly, we’re talking about the “spirit” of the fighter.

A great fighter has to KNOW he is “in the right”, or is RIGHTEOUS, and that it is his “destiny” to be a GREAT champion. For many great fighters this is evident by their faith that GOD, (as he perceives HIM), is on his side - in his corner so to speak. I’m not preaching here. It is a FACT that many, if not most, great fighters had a great faith in God. Witness Muhammad Ali. See the “heart” of a great champion in one of the Muhammad Ali Videos.

So then, I believe that the “heart” of a true boxing champion is dependant on his faith in himself and/or his faith that GOD is also guiding his destiny. In other words; The fighter with the most heart will be the one that feels he is DESTINED to be the Champion. Thus, he lives up to his “calling” in life. He feels that he MUST succeed!

Next, and at least as important, is training. Naturally, a boxer, even with the heart of a true champion, will not excel except that he is trained well. But, he will probably NOT train well if he does not have the “HEART” afore-mentioned. So, we’re back to “HEART” again. Maybe that is why true
boxing fans talk so much about the “heart” of a fighter. In the Muhammad Ali Video, Rumble in the Jungle, you can see the “heart” of a great fighter in action.

This much talked about “heart” will make the fighter “go the distance”. Not just in a boxing match, but in every aspect of his life and training. For the fighter with this “heart” there is NO GIVING UP OR GIVING IN! There is NO turning back. He has programmed himself to reach for the unreachable star. He is DESTINED TO BE A GREAT FIGHTER, period.

For all of you who aspire to be great fighters, or aspire to be great at anything, you have got to train your “heart” or “spirit”. You have got to perceive yourself as what you want to be. You have to be GREAT in your mind, and you have to feel RIGHTEOUS about your dream to be a great fighter. I believe that only, and I repeat ONLY - if you feel “destined” to be great will you have what it takes to be a Champion. To see a truly spectacular display of “heart” in a great champion watch the Muhammad Ali Video of his 3 great fights. It includes “Rumble in the Jungle”, the “Thrilla in Manila”, and the great match when he first fought Sonny Liston in “I Shook the World”.

Muhammad Ali when still just a kid convinced himself he was destined for GREATNESS. His mind and spirit and his God didn’t let him down. He suffered set-backs and trials, but he never once believed in his mind that he was anything less than a great fighter. To this day, long after his retirement, he is still “The Greatest”. Listen very carefully; He became “The Greatest” - because he KNEW in his own mind that he was. There is no doubt in this writers mind that there will never be another like Muhammad Ali until there is someone else who believes in himself as much as Ali did.

So there you go. . . You can have the “heart” of a great fighter if you train your “heart” - with your mind.
