A good fencing match is a high-intensity melding of combat and ballet. The warriors push each other up and down a fencing strip with light flashing off their blades as they thrust, parry, attack and evade. While nobody jumps over rocks or retreats up stairs a la the Princess Bride, there is a great, dynamic aspect to the sport.
Shropshire is already experiencing the benefits of the 2012 Olympics and more are on the way. The Games are creating a real difference not only in London but also across the country.
Major sporting events have a history of boosting economies and inspiring people. Talking at a conference in Stafford, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson spoke about the potential of the games: “Never underestimate the power of the Olympics and Paralympics, they have the power to inspire and unite.” The legacy of the games will give people greater access to more sports and exercise facilities and will help to change people’s lifestyles: “Young people will grow up witnessing the ambitious 2012 Olympic and Paralympic vision becoming a reality.”
Watching the Winter Olympics from Torino isn’t all that glorious. Take curling for example. Take it and send it back to Scotland. Throw it back in the loch.
At least, there should be no men teams in curling. The American Men’s Team is so lousy one player just curled a stone that didn’t pass the red line and was rejected. The shot before that was 10 yards in front of the bull’s-eye. I haven’t seen one woman make such rotten shots. Leave the game to the ladies and leave it out of the Olympics.
The Olympic Games first took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. The Olympics took place to bring athletes together from all over the world in an effort to promote world peace. Today the Olympics still hold those standards. The goal is to educate youth through sports and teach friendship and sportsmanship. The Olympic Games include a variety of individual and team sports.
In 1920 the Olympic flag was presented. The flag contains five interconnected rings with a white background. The rings symbolize the five significant continents and are symbolize the friendship to be gained from these international competitions. The rings are blue, yellow, black, green, and red. These colors were chosen because at least one of them appears on the flag of every country in the world.
Everybody knows that the Olympic Games are due to be held in Athens in 2004. Apart from the accepted consequences, positive and negative, for the city of Athens and Greece in general this sporting extravaganza will seriously affect the yachting fraternity from mid-July to mid-September.
Two major crises will afflict the greater Athens area i.e. transportation and accommodation. I will refer to certain aspects of transportation later but the accommodation problem will directly affect yachtsmen. How, you might ask ? I will tell you.
